Thriller opening
Brighton Rock
Mise en scene
- Low key lighting to make the scene more intense and threatening.
- Costumes are middle class, and resemble gangsters from that time period with long coats and smart ties, realistic.
- The scene is at night to emphasize the danger.
- Urban set location, Brighton. It’s raining which reflects the depressive mood of the scene and of the inevitability of the man’s death and how this is sad.
- The death of the character creates an enigma as the audience has no idea why he has been killed or who he is, apart from that he’s a gangsta from Brighton.
- The color is desaturated creating a dark and mysterious atmosphere, which is also quite intense.
Sound
- Little amount of instruments, mimicking the wave as it gets closer to the camera, parallel to on screen.
- Dramatic music builds as tension rises (stringed instruments), more instruments join and pace quickens, until the dramatic climax(man being stabbed) , after which the pace slows down.
- Sinister mood created by lone instrument/note.
Editing
- The pace is slow due to small amount of cuts. Until the flight scene were a lots more cuts were made quicken the pace appropriately.
- There is a lot of match on actions to match the intense fight scene and to quicken the pace by having more cuts.
Camera work
- The tracking in shot to the phone in the house shows the importance of the phone call.
- Wide ELS to establish were the phone booth is in relation to the antagonists.
- The Tracking out shot on the man in the booth is at first a restricted view, not allowing you to see where the man is, but then cuts to the establishing shot
overall good Jonah - you have completed 5. In general, some good analysis here but you really need alot more screengrabs which really help your analysis come alive.
