"Exam"- Sasha

Camera Work

  • Only extreme close up, and close ups are shown in the opening, they might have used this technique, to show the individual personality close up.
  • Panning of the fingers, to show what he’s doing.
  • Focus pulls, focuses on her mouth, to concentrate on her heavy breathing, then changes focus to her chest, which makes us understand, she is having pains in her chest.

Mise en Scene

  • Each character has an object that represents there personality, or their life. Some of these probs could be important during the rest of the film, that maybe why they have used extreme close ups.
  • Lighting is concentrated on the characters faces, and its blacked out in the back ground, so nothing can distract us from the facial expressions, or even there body language.
  • Each characters body language is different, but yet it seems like they all want the same thing, maybe to pass the “exam” as it gives it away in the title. Some of the characters body language shows confidence, and cockiness, but others seem more fragile, for exam, the female character with the cuts on her arm, she pulls down her sleeves very shyly.
  • The pill the male character takes could be important to the rest of the film. Because it show that he has an illness, and maybe that’s why they wanted to show him taking the pill.
  • The characters all seems to have a secret, which could soon get let out.
  • The coin tossing could also be a symbol of luck,

Editing

  • Editing seems to be a slow pace. This helps us take in what is happening in each shot.
  • Cutting is used in every shot.
  • No reverse shot is used, because we are concentrating on each individual character.

Sound

  • A lot of diagetic sound is used, like the taps, eating.
  • But also there is a soundtrack, which seems to be chilled and tensed at the same time.
  • A rare amount of dialog is being used. I reckon the dialog is only being used on the characters that feel more confident on passing the exam.

  1. try to incorporate more of the narrative terms that you have been taught like restricted narration, enigma etc.

There is real over emphasis on extreme close up here - why? effect?
