London to Brighton - Jonah

Thriller opening

London to Brighton

Mise en scene

  • Setting is realistic urban set, easy to relate to, very gritty.
  • The filth and mayhem of the toilet décor reflects the danger the characters are in.
  • Costumes are of lower class citizens and not very respectable people, which may suggest they have done something bad or in danger.
  • Low key lighting is used to create atmosphere and make the scene seem moody and dramatic.
  • Both female characters seem in a lot of distress, the costume hair and make-up all reflect this. The older woman has obviously been hurt (face is bruised badly) and her hair is looking very unattractive as if she has been through a rough time. The younger girl also reflects this, her make-up is much more mature for her age and the older women cleans it off her suggesting she has done something wrong or does not wrong to be recognized, as if someone is after them.
Sound

  • There is no soundtrack so the audience are forced to watch carefully to find out what is going on, having no soundtrack also makes it more realistic and more gripping as this could actually be real.
  • The sound of the older woman breathing into the mirror is ranked up so you can really hear the distress in her breathing. Creating tension and an enigma to why they were, maybe, running or fighting.
Editing
  • The editing is used to create realism and disruption for the viewer, this is done by having lots of close ups on the older women, focusing on her face to see the damage.
  • Continuity editing is used to create realism, the story is told in chronological order for added realism.
Camera work

  • BCU’s are used to create distortion and panic, there are CU’s on the chips as they are furiously eating them to show how panicked they are.
  • Tight framing is used showing only body parts, mainly face and shoulders, this makes the scene more intense and personal as its right in your face.
  • Handheld cameras are used for realism, as if the viewer as inside the scene with them experiencing the panic and fear of the female characters.
