"Secret Window"- Sasha

Camera Work

  • First shot of the opening is a medium close up, and it stays as this one shot for a while, this helps us ready closely on the characters facial expressions.
  • The camera stays where it is, when the characters drives away.
  • But as the character drives backwards, it’s as if the camera has released its self from the car, and as the car drives away it turns into a long shot, with out the camera moving.
  • You see a medium long shot of the character getting out of his car. The whole car is in the shot, as well as the character.
  • Panning is used to follow the character into the motel, this helps us follow the character footsteps, and possible help have an understanding on how he’s feeling.
  • One shot is held by hand; this creates a more edgy effect, and shows the stages of being calm to then being intense.
  • Panning is used again to follow the character into the motel room, it shows that this scene is even more intense, seeing as panning is used again straight after, but panning out side the room.

Mise en Scene

·         The window wipers seem to be used in the shots a lot; it gives us a distraction between the character expression, and the wipers.
·         His facial expressions seem to be constant, it always seem to be mad, crossed with sadness, and some aggression.
·         The lighting seems to be dark, with low lighting being used.
·          You see an out of focus wedding ring, this could have been purposely in the scene, to show that he is married, and the woman he finds in the room, could be his wife.
·         His body language tells me he is determined to find something out, and eager.
·         He picks up a key, but you don’t actually see a close up of it. But we all assume it is, this keeps us guessing.
·         The characters body language changes as soon as he enters the room. He is no longer eager to find out, but he is more devastated, and he uses more body language with his arms.

Editing

  • Not much editing has been done in the opening.
  • Its more or less been taken in one shot
  • Some cuts are made.

Sound

  • Opening begins with diagetic sounds of the window wipers. You hear the wipers before you even see them; it gives the sound of consistency, and also the sound leads us to the wipers, which then leads us to the characters face.
  • There’s also where the character narrates over. This is a non- diageitc sound, because you the characters still cant hear it, even though its his own thoughts.
  • You hear a lot of the car, where its drives off, the sound is quite tense, as it sounds like he is in a rush.
  • When the character opens the door, the sound becomes muffled, as you don’t get to hear the female characters voice, but as soon as the male character shouts, you only hear a muffled version of it. But there is also a edgy soundtrack over the top.
