"44 Inch Chest"- Sasha

Camera Work

  • Mainly mediam close up, or close up of probs being smashed or broken.
  • Then long shot of everything together, all broken
  • Median close up of dog looking scared, could mean the dog is all alone.
  • Median shot of man laying on floor, then close up of his hand, and then close up of his face; the man looks like he’s dead. This can suggest that the man trashed his house.
  • Don’t see a character for a while, then camera creeps around the corner, to find a body lying on the floor. This keeps the audience intrigued and curious on what’s around the corner.
  • First shot is out of focus at start, and then it focus pulls.
  • Close up of glass, then median shot of where the glass came from.

Mise en Scene

  • Smashed objects show us some one could have smashed the place.
  • Lighting is quite chilled and light, which creates a contract on how to room it self looks, and as well with the bodying there.
  • No dialog is used.
  • The characters body gives us a hint that he is dead, because the way he is lying, and the way his hand doesn’t move, when the camera focus on it.
  • The characters face doesn’t move for a while, giving us another impression that he is dead. Until he blinks and he takes a deep breath.

Editing

  • (flash back) the beginning of the film could be the end of the story
  • Lots off long takes. Each shot lasts for about 4 seconds, or more. This makes makes the audience take in on what has actually happened.
  • Slow pace
  • Editing fits in with the music, going at the same pace as the song.

Sound

  • The music in the background could either be a diagetic sound or non-diagetic. Seeing as the character could be listening to the song while he is lying there, but however we don’t see anything playing the song. So this song could also be a soundtrack.
  • The song contracts with what is happening on the set. Seeing as the song is a love song, and what is on set is the opposite. But this could tell us a lot about the character. How he could have messed the set up, because he was heart broken.

‘There Will Be Blood’

Camera Work

  • Lots of medium long shot and close ups.
  • Panning, following the characters moves, to show what he is doing.
  • Low angles, eye levels
  • Over the shoulder, makes it look like we are looking over the characters shoulder to what he is holding.

Mise en Scene

  • Mostly dark lighting, unless the character goes out of the mine, but the lighting is still dark, seeing as its early morning or sunset. You don’t get to see the characters face much because of the lighting being so dark. There was probably little lighting being used in this scene.
  • The prob he mainly uses is a pick hacks, which can tell us this is an important object he is using, because it is helping him get to what he wants, which makes the audience curious.
  • The hat the character is wearing also helps disguise his face, seeing as it creates a shadow. This could make a mystery to this character. However when he is out of the mine, you see him fully, this could mean, he’s portrayed as a different character out side the mines, where as inside he could be classed as dark.
  • As the character sees the light shinning on his face, he sees its daylight, and he looks up. Then decides to see daylight. This could mean he has spent so long down in the mine, that he has forgotten the light.
  • The character hold a rock, which he then kisses, this could suggest, that rock was what the character was looking for.

 Editing

  • there is a lot of simple editing.
  • Lots of cuts.
  • Long shots

 Sound

·         Starts of as a quite siren, as the tittles appear.
·         When picture appears, siren gets loader. This could suggest that something intense might happen, this creates a lot suspense for the characters.
·         After that, there is no sound track. But a good use of diagetic sound, like the pick hacks, the character climbing, wind blowing, thunder
·         There is no dialog. Just the natural sounds.

Final prelim

Editing Process

After the new year, we spent hours in the editing suite using 'Garageband' and 'Final Cut Pro' on the MACs, to produce our final film.

We came across many complications, such as losing our video and the video not being correctly captured. After a few days we got the hang of it.

Final Film - before Garageband

Before we edited the film further in Garageband, this is what it looked like. After comparing the finishing product with this version, it is clear that Garageband makes a huge difference in the quality of our film. The sound effects and music fill in the gaps and silences which make the film boring otherwise.

Storyboard

Storyboard
This is a storyboard hand drawn by Tommy, these were the original idea for our prelim task. The story has changed quite a lot, due to location complications and change in script. The core idea stayed the same, a sofa and two people catching up after a party.

Set Location

This is the set location we used, which took place on the second floor. At first we thought it would be a quiet location to shot, however when in practice it seemed to be a busy throughway for students, making it hard to film as there was lots of noise. It was also hard to control the background as people keep walking past the camera. But after a few days of filming we managed to get it done.
